Resolution Honoring AANHPI Heritage Month

WHEREAS, in 1992, the United States officially designated the month of May as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month; and

WHEREAS, AANHPI Heritage Month is an important occasion to celebrate and pay tribute to the generations of significant achievements and contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders to the United States; and

WHEREAS, AANHPI history has been significantly erased, and it should be included in the K-12 curriculum alongside other facets of American history; and

WHEREAS, AANHPI communities are diverse and multifaceted, comprising many distinct ethnicities, language dialects, and backgrounds with no single narrative or culture; and

WHEREAS, the Texas Democratic Party (TDP) recognizes the significant challenges faced by AANHPI communities, including discrimination, xenophobia, and racism, which continue to fuel fears, perpetuate stigmas against community members, and contribute to the rise and persistence of violence against AANHPI local small businesses and places of worship; and

WHEREAS, today, AANHPIs are the fastest-growing racial and ethnic group in the United States, with nearly two million people who call this state home, accounting for nearly 6% of the state’s population (over one million eligible voters) yet continuing to remain underrepresented; and

WHEREAS, the Texas Democratic Party recognizes the invaluable contributions of AANHPI communities to our nation’s rich tapestry of diversity, culture, and history; and

WHEREAS, the Texas Democratic Party reaffirms its commitment to promoting inclusivity, diversity, and equity within our party and throughout our communities; and

WHEREAS, AANHPIs have played pivotal roles in shaping our nation’s history, economy, arts, sciences, technology, medicine, sports, law, government, and politics for decades, contributing to the progress and prosperity of our nation.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Texas Democratic Party hereby honors Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and celebrates the diverse and vibrant cultures, traditions, and histories of these communities; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Texas Democratic Party recognizes the contributions of AANHPI Democrats to our party’s principles, platforms, and electoral successes, and we reaffirm our commitment to amplifying their voices and advancing their interests within our party, state, and nation; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Texas Democratic Party condemns all forms of racism, discrimination, and bigotry targeting AANHPI communities and reaffirms its commitment to stand in solidarity with them in the fight against hate and injustice; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Texas Democratic Party calls upon all elected officials, leaders, and community members to work together to actively advocate for policies that promote equity and justice for all and urge efforts to address the unique needs and challenges faced by AANHPI communities, building a society that values and uplifts their contributions through collaboration and partnership.
